Congas are the essence of performance in Santiago de Cuba, and are also known as santiagueras.Their origin can be traced to corpus Christi processions, although their most powerful presence was always seen and heard on day of ST Santiago on July 25, a date that coincides with carnaval, but the carnaval is impossible without the congas.
The conga conga groups usually do not include dancing couples or costumed performers, but rather accumulate power and prestige by gathering a crowd of dancing followers as they march through out the city. Conga Los Hoyos is the most popular and powerful in Santiago de Cuba.
